Down here in Florida, the most accepted cool wardrobe, which also works throughout the South, is a high end golf shirt (shiny merchanized cotton is my favorite) with linen or tropic weight wool or cotton trousers. Always brown shoes. Take your blazer in with you and put it on before the meeting. The tie and dress shirt are reserved for the most formal of meetings.

I work in a typical North-American-casual everyday- High-Tech sector and cannot even imagine wearing said ensemble to meet and greet other professionals. I suppose such apparels are appropriate and perhaps accepted in a profession where people are aware of fashion and trends and follow it to their personal extent.

Dear Tyler,As Southern men doing business in the pre-airconditioned South[ern US] would agree, the following sartorial choices work nicely in a hot climate while maintaining a sense of decorum: (1) the seersucker suit in blue (the classic), brown, or olive, (2) the khaki suit in khaki or olive, and (3) the linen suit in white, natural, light brown, or grey. Jeans are very hot and never business-appropriate and shorts...well we won't go there!

The authors advice sounds quite reasonable...provided, of course, that the person wearing said costume (like the author) is a journalist operating primarily in the world of international design. But for the average reader?

The business cool with shorts option sounds great and makes sense in hot and humid weather in Japan. However, only foreigners can get away with the look. A Japanese affecting the same look will definitely be thought of as disrespectful or a little crazy. Japanese society's pressure to conform still rules including in the area of "proper" business dress.
