Forget 'What are your strengths and weaknesses?' If you want to get the real dope on prospective employees, ask job candidates these seven questions.
By now, everyone has heard of the failed bombing of Delta/Northwest flight 253. This was frighteningly close to being a disaster, but the bomb didn't go off. Now the only disaster we have is the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and its abysmal handling of the situation. It might surprise you to know that there still isn't anyone leading the TSA right now; President Obama's long-delayed nomination is sitting with the Senate, blocked by a lonely Republican senator. This is unacceptable.
Even smart people make financial moves that are downright illogical. Emotions and superstitions have a sneaky way of keeping you from rational financial decisions. But dumb choices can have serious, real-world consequences. Here are some of the biggest blunders we all make, plus tips from the experts on how to keep cool.

- Democratic Candidates Face Off in Forum
Three Democratic candidates in Chicago's North Shore 10th Congressional District met in a debate Sunday.
The three are fighting for the seat that has been in Republican hands for years, but now, there is an opening because incumbent Mark Kirk has vacated the seat to run for U.S. Senate.
Candidate Julie Hamos is a state representative, Dan Seals is a consultant who ran two losing campaigns against Kirk, and Elliot Richardson is an attorney.
Among the issues discussed Sunday afternoon were jobs, campaign finance reform and dealing with terrorism.
Richardson and Hamos advocated strong sanctions on Iran.
"We have to respond very forcefully with strong sanctions. The strong sanctions are before Congress, and we need to make sure they're not just passed this time but actually enforced," Hamos said.
"We need tough, serious sanctions against Iran, and we need to start now," said Richardson.
"We also have to put more effort into stopping and finding the conditions that cause terrorism. In my mind, that is a lack of education, that is poverty, and that is government's support of injustice," Seals said.
There are five Republicans campaigning to succeed Kirk in the district. - Hamos Says She's Best to Win North Shore Congressional Seat, but Foes Scoff at State Government Experience
State Rep. Julie Hamos told a debate audience today that she's the best Democrat to win the 10th Congressional District seat because of her experience and ability to woo voters who've backed Republican U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk for a decade.
But her two opponents in the Feb. 2 primary scoffed at that notion, suggesting that experience in Springfield might not be so valuable, given state government's dire straits.
"There are lots of things that are wrong with Washington," said Dan Seals of Wilmette. "Not being enough like Springfield is not one of them."
"I’m a nice guy who hasn’t been in Springfield for the past 10 years," said Elliot Richardson, a Highland Park attorney. "I think that’s a good thing."
Earlier in today's debate at the North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, Hamos had referred to Richardson and Seals, who twice lost to Kirk, as nice guys.
The affluent, well-educated voters of the 10th District are known for crossing party lines, voting for Democratic presidential candidates the past three chances but also voting five times to send the Republican Kirk to Congress. The seat is now open because Kirk is running for U.S. Senate.
Hamos, a 10-year state lawmaker, said she’s made it her mission to understand those who voted for Kirk and found some were Jewish, independents and women. She argued she is better able to "woo" those voters, specifically mentioning her belief that the Republican nominee in the 10th District would be a woman.
Winning the general election "is a big challenge, and yet I’m the one who can claim that for our district," said Hamos, who often mentions she is the daughter of Holocaust survivors.
Hamos’ comments came in her closing remarks. Seals did not respond directly, but Richardson asked for more time to do so.
"I don’t think the Mark Kirk Democrats are going to elect a spend and tax person" from Springfield, Richardson said.
Seals told the audience he's been close, scoring 47 percent against Kirk.
"I stood up and challenged the incumbent Republican congressman when few others would," Seals said. - Julie Hamos Endorsed by Stonewall Democrats of Illinois
Julie Hamos has earned the endorsement of the Stonewall Democrats of Illinois.
"Stonewall Democrats of Illinois is proud to endorse Julie Hamos because she has a record of standing tall and vigorously defending civil rights," said Andy Shapero, Board Member. "Julie will be a progressive leader in Congress and a true advocate for the LGBT community."
Julie Hamos strongly supports full civil marriage equality and in Congress will fight to repeal the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act and the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
"Stonewall Democrats of Illinois is a perfect example of a grassroots organization that has mobilized to enact real change," said Julie Hamos. "Marriage equality is a civil rights issue. All levels of government - federal, state and local - should recognize civil marriage equality and afford the full benefits and responsibilities that follow."

Julie Hamos has been part of the LGBT movement since the 1980s when she served as the first legislative representative for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. ### - Feminist Majority and Women's Action for New Directions Endorse Julie Hamos for Congress
Julie Hamos has earned the endorsement of Feminist Majority and Women’s Action for New Directions (WAND) for her 10th District Congressional campaign.
“Women are particularly affected by our broken health care system and our languishing economy,” said Eleanor Smeal, president, Feminist Majority. “Julie Hamos knows what it takes to solve these problems, and is not afraid to tackle them head on.”
Julie began her career as an attorney fighting for civil rights - focusing on the rights of women. She wrote the first laws to protect victims of domestic violence in Illinois, then fought to secure funding for programs and shelters geared toward the needs of abused women. As a legislator, Julie has fought for reproductive rights and currently supports health care reform leveling premiums paid by women and men.
In addition to the economy and health care reform, Julie Hamos will be a strong voice on foreign policy issues. Julie Hamos believes the war in Afghanistan requires a strategy to deal with the threat of Al Qaeda, as well as clear benchmarks in an exit strategy – not a "perpetual drift." In Congress, Julie will be vigilant in working toward these goals.
“In 2002, Julie Hamos stood side-by-side with then-Senator Barack Obama as the lone Illinois legislators opposing the Iraq war,” said Susan Shaer, executive director, WAND. “In Congress, she’ll hold President Obama accountable for benchmarks and a clear strategy to end the war in Afghanistan.”
Feminist Majority and WAND are the latest in a series of endorsements from national progressive organizations.
“I am grateful for the endorsements of Feminist Majority and WAND,” said Julie Hamos. “I look forward to working with them as we address the big challenges facing our nation.”
The Feminist Majority promotes equality for women and men, non-violence, reproductive health, peace, social justice and economic development, and to enhance feminist participation in public policy.
WAND empowers women to act politically to reduce violence and militarism, and redirect excessive military resources toward unmet human and environmental needs.
Julie Hamos has been endorsed by AFSCME Council 31, National Organization for Women, Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois, Teamsters Joint Council 25, EMILY’s List, UAW – Region 4, Women’s Campaign Forum and more than 35 elected officials.
