All that a congestion charge does is move the traffic jams somewhere else. Over here in London, driving around the ring road to avoid the Ј8 ($16) congestion charge is pure pain with long delays as hundreds of motorists try to drive down a one lane road.
The only way to get around the congestion charge is to either drive a licensed taxi, a motorcycle a hybrid or fully electric car or simply walk.
Is this news a good thing? Yes but something needs to be done line bus, taxi and motorcycle lanes like we have in the UK. This, in a small way, does encourage people to take public transport rather than driving which can only be good for business. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
Has it worked effectively in London? If so, then maybe NYC should revisit it.
If it's just a flat $8 fee, I think it's too excessive. It should make allowance for handicap, and low income workers that man the coffee shops and restaurants and work everyday.
Plus, I think the fee should vary depending on the time of day. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
It's a sad day for fascism.
The middle class people on NY/NJ can rest easy, once again Bloomhitler has failed. A long sting of loses for the hobby mayor.
- he tried to eliminate free parking on Sundays, FAILED
- he tried to build a mega stadium in the center of the city(I guess he really cares about traffic), FAILED
- he tried to tax(that's all congestion pricing is) the working people of the city and use the money to take care of himself and other upper east side millionaires, FAILED
He did have one success though, he managed to keep the police officers salaries in NYC right at the poverty line while cutting property taxes for the rich.
He doesn't care about middle class people. The police dept in that city is falling apart. In their most recent police graduation they needed 2000 they got 800. Police numbers are lower then they were in 2001. I'm not a cop, but I do respect that its a very hard job especially in NYC.
In ten years NYC will be overrun once again with crime that is if another terrorist attack doesn't turn it into a ghost town first.
That's Bloomberg's legacy- the end of NYC prosperity.

Whatever. He tried to get rid of "free parking" as in taxpayer subsidized parking. I think they should just put charge the proper amount for that parking and stop making me fund every bridge and tunneler that wants to "go out" in the city.
And the working people have enough money to own cars in NYC? Give me a break. This is just a hit on connected bankers and lawyers who want to drive around in the Mercedes to work all the time.
Frankly I would love to see all that traffic money go to improving the subway, adding an airport route that stops once downtown, once in midtown, and once somewhere convenient in each airport. There is nothing fun about commuting to work in a car.
As for your other issues, well, it is not like NYC has been very friendly to the middle class for a long time. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
No matter what we say, it is obvious that the goal of this act is to alleviate traffic - which keeping in mind the crazy New York lifestyle is practically impossible.
Owning a car or a motorcycle and living in Manhattan is just unthinkable unless your apartment building owns a secure garage with 24/7 service (which we all know is often not the case). http://Havens-Of-Manhattan.com/ is a website working as a online real estate directory where you can review if a certain apartment building features a garage and full service. Why would drivers in Manhattan "celebrate" our failure to help alleviate a horrific traffic problem? They can "relax" now though, knowing that there's no way they can drive through there no matter how much they're willing to pay. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
It doesn't "alleviate" the problem. It temporary moves the congestion to bus stations and train hubs. Then it overwhelms the mass transit system, drives away tourists, and forces the people who had to drive anyway to pay a tax.
But, hey as long as they get their money, who cares about the rest of that noise. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
Bloomberg's a dork who never drives and has no idea how real people live. I bet his limo driver is happy it's been killed though.
He's really gotta get out of office soon before he causes any more damage.
I've driven around Manhattan many many times and it's slow, but if you avoid the high traffic times, it can be quite fun. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
what damage are you talking about the city is in the best shape its ever been in - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
What are you talking about? He takes the subway to work, I know a bunch of people who've run into him regularly, he's been doing it for years... - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
"The middle class people on NY/NJ can rest easy" yes the tunnel trash is celebrating tonight. Why don't you just stay in the burbs jackasses - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
I just heard on the news that they're building a 60-foot wall around Manhattan, which will then be filled in with water. Good luck to you, you poor lobotomy victim. - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
"build a mega stadium in the center of the city" - gee what are you talking about? That was on the far west side and the only reason it failed was that Silver was paid off by MSG,
Why do you think this was defeated? Silver again!!!
"the upper east side millionaires" - haha most of the money is downtown now
please do me a favor and keep your dumb ass out of my city - Comments on New York State Senate squashes Bloomberg's traffic charging plan for NYC
"That was on the far west side" Gee what are you talking about? Midtown Manhattan goes go from river to river and that would include the west side. No sure what you mean by the far west side, but I don't think you do either. I do know that it would have been right near the tunnels and the west side highway which are pretty jammed up already with out a 70,000 person stadium adding to the mix.
"haha most of the money is downtown now" Really the NY Times real estate section said that the most valuable block in the city for residential real estate was the one the Bloomberg lives on, it happens to be located on the upper east side. Maybe you should go there and look around, or you could just keep spewing your cute little factless drivel. Your ch
